happy 4th of july! we love this holiday and will be spending the day grilling some tofu burgers, eating fresh corn, drinking iced tea and Boylan’s soda, and just kicking back and enjoying this long weekend.

anything goes…

we saw the Broadway revival Anything Goes a few weeks back and it was really good. it made us want to sing and dance around and say things like, “anyone have hot pants for a game of shuffleboard?” (well, almost). on that same trip we ate at this amazing place (where we devoured the Skyscraper burger, beet salad, and the greatest fresh-squeezed juice ever made, called Pretty in Pink). we also left enough time to grab some of our fave cupcakes (and cookies for later) from here. yeah, we like food a lot. but the musical was fun, too, and completely deserving of all the acclaim it has received since opening.

about a month ago we visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art with Tae’s parents as well as my aunt and uncle, who are tour guides at the PMA. there was an amazing exhibit on the fashion design of Roberto Capucci and a beautiful show of Italian landscapes by George Inness. there was also a quirky installation entitled “Health for Sale” that displayed posters of advertisements for cure-all medicines, anatomical charts, and warnings against illicit drugs. one poster in particular caught my eye:

the title, in English, is “Man as Industrial Palace” and was a 1926 rendering by Fritz Kahn of the respiratory and digestive system of the human body as a chemical plant (Germany’s chemical production was the most advanced in the world at that time). the design of the poster is pretty interesting, but even more intriguing was a 2010 video by Henning Lederer that takes Kahn’s poster and turns it into animation.

how cool is that? i love all the little factory workers calmly pulling the levers and frantically running all the switchboards in the brain.

wedding, part five: more reception

dinner, toasts, cupcakes, and sparklers:

the party continued with dinner in the tent, which was beautifully illuminated by tiny white lights around the perimeter and lanterns on the wooden tent posts (one of my favorite decorative details). some highlights from our menu included avocado gazpacho, grilled seasonal vegetables and tofu, whipped taro root cake with pineapple, and wild mushroom ravioli. there was also a “symphony of pastries” and a cupcake tower from The Bent Spoon, a local artisanal ice cream and bakery shop. for entertainment, we had an amazing guitarist – Jason Liebman – who played all throughout dinner and dessert, performing our favorite music, from Cat Stevens to Amos Lee, Bread to Van Morrison, Jack Johnson to Tracy Chapman and many others. it was mellow and just our style. he even learned an entire set of songs just for our wedding – definitely a highlight of our reception! those adorable kids making silly faces are my three youngest cousins; they are enjoying the outdoor lounge area created by our talented friends, John and David, the landscape designers and event planners behind Groundswell Design Group. to send us on our way, our guests made a pathway with sparklers as Jeff and I ran through and then drove off in my family’s SmartCar. thanks for letting us relive our wedding with you! we have one more final post later tonight to wrap up our (2nd) anniversary week!

wedding, part four: the reception

receiving line, photo booth, and cocktail hour:

here is the first set of our reception photos. we enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, dinner, music, and plenty of desserts at the Albemarle mansion on the campus of the American Boychoir School in Princeton. one of our favorite details was our polaroid guestbook – we set up a “photobooth” for our friends and family by hanging a curtain and enlisting a bridesmaid to operate the camera. Sean Rubin (our friend, artist and groomsman) designed the cover to the album with a portrait of us in our wedding-day attire. my aunt Denise printed and hand-cut the yellow escort cards (as well as the table numbers and place cards). we purchased galvanized flower pots from Ikea for the centerpieces, which were filled with bunches of white hydrangea. the final photo shows us entering the tent as we were introduced for the first time as “Mr. & Mrs.”! next up, the party continues with dinner, music, cupcakes, and sparklers…
